Gardeners helping to reduce food waste – an eco-community initiative
For those of us born in the 1940s, we arrived into a world of ‘grow your own’, foods in season, gluts and shortages, and the annual rituals of preparing and preserving fruit, vegetables – and yes, even eggs – to last us through the fallow months. Pantry shelves lined with Kilner jars of salted runner beans, jams, pickles and chutneys. No freezers or fridges – just a cold marble shelf for dairy products and a meat safe, fixed to the coldest wall in the pantry, made of wood and wire mesh to keep out the flies.
Are there other gardeners and allotment holders in Thelwall who are ‘growing their own’ today who might be interested in seeing how we can share our surpluses and our knowledge with others in our community? Less food miles, less food waste. More ‘wonky’ stuff
