Rt Rev William Pwaisho from the Solomon Islands & Honorary Assistant Bishop of Chester opened the new social area facility at All Saints Church, Thelwall, last Sunday 7th June in a blaze of colour.

The work to renovate and redecorate the church so that it can be used as a community facility for committee meetings, and events was completed on time and (almost) to budget.  The high quality and re-purposing of the two rows of removed pews as furniture within the church was hugely successful, but the thing that strikes the visitor most is the terracotta carpet and the energy saving LED lighting, which gives a warm and friendly feel without detracting from the traditional setting of the church, with over 80% of the pews remaining intact.

The new Howe seating allows for flexibility, and meetings can be held in the open plan social area with casual seating, or in the formality of the pew area.

Rev Douglas Black, who has been Vicar of All Saints for more than 12 years and whose brainchild the project is said “We could not have done this without the outstanding support from 12 different charities including a large landfill communities fund grant from FCC Environment, distributed by Waste Recycling Environmental Heritage Fund (WREN), as well as many donations, both great and small, from church members and from members of the Thelwall community.  We would like to thank everyone who made this possible, and to extend an invitation to all the groups in the area to come and use the facility.”

The project was designed by the Chester based architects Donald Insall and Associates under the guidance of the Chester Diocesan Advisory Committee and the Victorian Society, and the work was expertly carried out by Recclesia Ltd, Hartwell Developments Ltd of Lymm, and Maltby’s of Chester. Jessica Holland of Donald Insall Associates, the Architect on the project described the work as a ‘real transformation’.  http://www.donaldinsallassociates.co.uk/news/article/completion-celebrations-at-all-saints-church-thelwallDSC06602

The facility can seat 30 on the new flexible seating, or more if pews are used, and include tea / coffee making facilities, 42” TV monitor with HDMI and VGA connection and DVD Player.  OHP, projector screen, and a full audio suite are also available if needed.    The facility is open for public use from mid June, and enquiries about bookings should be made to the Vicarage on 01925 261166, by email (church-hire@allsaints.org.uk), or to the Churchwardens.
